CRATE

Finding sounds without losing the session. Organise audio samples by type, estimate tempo and key, and generate MIDI patterns for a production session.

The everyday problem

Sample libraries accumulate across folders and packs. CRATE provides a local view of those files so a producer can search by musical role and inspect useful audio information.

How it works

The application scans audio and MIDI files, assigns categories from filenames and estimates tempo and key. A separate generator creates MIDI variations from a chosen root, scale, tempo and length, with a drag-out workflow for a digital audio workstation.

Implementation

An Electron interface connects to Python analysis and MIDI-generation scripts. Audio estimates use librosa; MIDI generation uses pretty_midi. File categories are rule-based rather than learned audio classifications.

Availability and limits

CRATE is a local desktop prototype without a public installer. Tempo and key are estimates that need listening checks, especially for short or ambiguous samples. Distribution and end-to-end installation have not been verified for this portfolio.
